 Barbecue do Sr. Jorge

The Soul of FAUP Architecture

The Legend of Jorge Vieira
The "Barbecue do Sr. Jorge" is not merely a commercial catering event; it is a living monument to the Escola do Porto (The Porto School). For over 30 years, Jorge Vieira, the legendary custodian and "right-hand man" of the Faculty, has been the bridge between the academic and the human.

The Philosophy of the Space
While the world studies FAUP for its white concrete walls designed by Pritzker-winner Álvaro Siza, those who live there know that Sr. Jorge is the one who made those walls feel like home. The barbecue began as a small, Friday - afternoon ritual to alleviate the stress of intense architectural "deliveries." Today, it is a massive cultural phenomenon that draws thousands of alumni back to the "Meadow of FAUP" (Prado da FAUP).

A Generational Bridge
Our "About" is a story of three decades. From the analog days of hand-drawn blueprints to the digital age of BIM, Sr. Jorge’s grill has been the one constant. We represent the "hidden curriculum" of architecture teaching students that the most important space they will ever design is the one where people gather to eat, drink, and talk.

 SERVICES: The "Sr. Jorge" Experience

We offer a sensory journey that defines the Porto academic experience:

  • The Gastronomic Tradition (O Churrasco):
The menu is deceptively simple and culturally iconic. We serve the traditional fêvera (grilled pork cutlet) marinated in a secret "FAUP-style" sauce, served on artisanal bread. It is the fuel that has powered thousands of architectural degree ceremonies.

  • The "Sunset" Scenography:
We provide a curated atmosphere set against the backdrop of the Douro River. Our service includes the setup of the outdoor "Arraial" (traditional Portuguese street party) within the architectural complex, ensuring the spirit of the event respects the heritage of the site.

  • Alumni & Professional Networking:
The event serves as an informal "Open Office" day. We facilitate a space where the biggest names in Portuguese architecture former students of Siza and Souto de Moura mingle with the newest generation of designers.

  • Cultural Programming (In partnership with AEFAUP):
Integration with live music, DJ sets, and the "FAUPFest" arts festival. We provide the infrastructure for a full-day celebration that transitions from a quiet lunch to a high-energy evening festival.
